THE WOLOF LANGUAGE AS SPOKEN IN DAKAR, SENEGAL, IS PRESENTED TO THE BEGINNING STUDENT IN THIS TEXT THROUGH DIALOGS, EXERCISES, GRAMMAR EXPLANATIONS, AND CULTURAL NOTES. AN INTRODUCTORY SECTION GIVES A THOROUGH PRESENTATION OF WOLOF PHONOLOGY AND EXPLAINS THE PHONEMIC TRANSCRIPTION USED. IN EACH OF THE FIVE LESSONS WHICH FOLLOW, A DIALOG INTRODUCES NEW VOCABULARY AND GRAMMAR PATTERNS WHICH ARE THEN DESCRIBED BY A SERIES OF "GRAMMAR NOTES." EACH POINT OF GRAMMAR IS ACCOMPANIED BY A NUMBER OF DRILLS AND EXERCISES. THE ORDER OF PRESENTATION HAS BEEN CAREFULLY CONTROLLED, AND, WHERE POSSIBLE, WOLOF AND ENGLISH USAGES ARE COMPARED. THE AUTHORS HAVE DESIGNED THE LESSONS TO REFLECT SITUATIONS THAT THE NEWCOMER TO SENEGAL WILL ENCOUNTER--GREETINGS, SHOPPING, TRAVELING, AND RECREATION. CONTAINED IN THE APPRENDIXES ARE ADDITIONAL VOCABULARY AND CULTURAL NOTES, AS WELL AS LINGUISTIC TABLES AND FIVE ADDITIONAL DIALOGS.
